Support Freedom of the Press
The Canadian Freelance Union is deeply concerned about the personal attacks against our member, Samira Mohyeddin, in a recent open letter to the Board Chair and Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, dated July 3, 2026. In the letter, political organizations attempt to discredit and stigmatize Samira Mohyeddin for her work as a journalist reporting on the Canadian Museum for Human Rights exhibition titled Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present.
These unfounded allegations and mischaracterizations of her by political organizations are not just personal attacks that seek to discredit her work. They are also attempting to silence any reporting on the rights of Palestinians and the human rights violations by the state of Israel. They attack a fundamental principle of journalism – freedom of the press from political interference.
Samira Mohyeddin is an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker. For nearly a decade, she was a producer and host at CBC Radio and CBC Podcasts. She has shown courage in her work by standing up for freedom of expression and against organizations that seek to silence Canadian journalists covering Palestine.
We reject any attempts to intimidate or silence Samira Mohyeddin or any journalist. We call on Canadian Media organizations and civil society organizations to stand in solidarity with her and defend independent journalism, ensure protections for freedom of the press, and reject any interference from political organizations.
